The downsides of giving up sugar and what you can replace it with

When we at Verde began our journey of creating natural sweets, the first step was giving up refined sugar in our own diet. And while now we can confidently say this was one of the best decisions for our health, at the very beginning everything looked completely different. What really happens to your body when you quit sugar? Let us honestly tell you about what we went through ourselves, what pitfalls we encountered, and how we coped with the adaptation.

What Happens to Your Body After Quitting Sugar: The First Days

Many people think that quitting sugar is like flipping a switch: you decide, you quit, and everything immediately gets better. In reality, the first week turned out to be a real ordeal. What happens if you quit sugar? The body reacts to it as stress, because for years it received quick energy from refined sugar, and now it needs to rebuild itself.

In the first three to seven days, we faced what not everyone talks about openly: headaches that came in waves, especially in the afternoon. Irritability, when small things drove you crazy. Loss of energy – it felt like the battery was dead, and no amount of coffee helped. And the most difficult thing – an obsessive desire to eat something sweet. Not just “I want it,” but a real physical need that won’t let go.

This is not weakness of character or lack of motivation. How does quitting sugar affect the body in the first days? It’s a physiological “withdrawal,” similar to quitting any strong habit. Refined sugar causes addiction at the level of brain neurotransmitters, and when you remove it, the brain protests. It was used to getting quick dopamine, and now it demands it back.

Many people quit at this stage. They think: “This isn’t for me, I can’t do it, so my body needs sugar.” But the truth is that you just need to go through the adaptation, and it’s temporary.

What Quitting Sugar Leads To: The Adaptation Period

The effects of quitting sugar in the first week can be compared to rebooting a system. The body literally learns how to extract energy anew. Previously, it got it from fast carbohydrates – ate candy, got a sharp spike in glucose, then an equally sharp drop, wanted sweets again. A vicious circle.

What happens when you quit sugar in the second week? Gradually, the “withdrawal” symptoms begin to recede. Headaches become less frequent and weaker. Irritability passes. There’s a feeling that the fog in your head is clearing. Energy is still unstable, but it’s no longer as critical as in the first days.

We noticed that during this period it’s very important not to leave the body without support. If you simply remove sugar and replace it with nothing, adaptation will be agonizing. You need the right alternatives, which we’ll discuss later.

What Quitting Sugar Gives You After 2-3 Weeks

First – stable energy throughout the day. No more roller coasters: a rise after breakfast, a drop by lunch, another rise from a sweet snack, a crash by evening. Energy is even, without sharp jumps. It’s easier to wake up in the morning, you don’t feel sleepy after lunch during the day, and in the evening you have strength left for your favorite activities.

Second – mood becomes more stable.

Third – skin. After three weeks, we noticed that our skin became clearer. Breakouts, oily shine, and gray tone disappeared. The face seemed to brighten from within. This isn’t magic, but the downsides of sugar! Refined sugar provokes inflammatory processes and destroys collagen, and when it’s gone – the skin recovers.

Fourth – weight. Kilograms began to melt away smoothly, without torturous diets and calorie counting. Simply because “empty” calories disappeared, the desire to overeat stopped, the body learned to hear real hunger, not sugar addiction.

Fifth – taste buds. This was amazing. What previously seemed not sweet or completely tasteless suddenly revealed new nuances. An apple became sweet like candy. Natural yogurt – tasty on its own, without additives. Nuts that were previously “bland” suddenly burst with rich flavor. And factory cakes with tons of sugar began to be perceived as cloying and chemical.

The Downsides of Sugar and Why You Should Quit It

Before we tell you about replacement, it’s important to understand why you should give up refined sugar at all. The downsides of sugar for the body are not just extra calories, but a systemic impact on health:

Obesity – one teaspoon of sugar contains 20-25 calories, but these are “empty” calories without vitamins, fiber, and minerals. They don’t provide a feeling of satiety, but are excellent at depositing into fat reserves.

Insulin resistance and diabetes – constant spikes in blood glucose wear out the pancreas. Sooner or later, cells stop responding to insulin, and type 2 diabetes develops.

Destruction of blood vessels – refined sugar literally scratches the walls of blood vessels from the inside. The body tries to patch these damages with “bad” cholesterol, and atherosclerosis develops. People take cholesterol medications for years, although it would have been enough to just remove sugar.

Chronic fatigue – fast carbohydrates give a sharp rise in energy, and then an equally sharp drop. Hence the constant apathy, irritability, desire to “recharge” with another portion of sweets.

Destruction of tooth enamel – sugar creates an ideal environment for the reproduction of bacteria that destroy teeth.

Premature skin aging – refined sugar triggers the process of glycation, in which collagen and elastin are destroyed. The skin loses elasticity, wrinkles appear.

What Quitting Sugar Will Lead To: Real Experience from Verde

We started our journey not as expert nutritionists, but as an ordinary family that wanted to eat tasty food while not harming our health. If you don’t eat sugar, what will happen? In our case, it led to creating our own line of natural desserts.

When we gave up refined sugar, the question arose: what should replace our favorite sweets? We wanted something tasty with a cup of tea or coffee. Something you could give to a child without guilt. We started looking – and didn’t find it. The market was full of either industrial sweets with sugar and additives, or “diet” desserts that were absolutely tasteless.

Then we decided to create them ourselves. Our son Orest became the chief taster – if he didn’t approve of a new flavor, the candy was sent back for refinement. That’s how Verde was born.

If You Don’t Eat Sugar, What Will Happen: What to Replace Refined Sugar With?

The most frequent question we’re asked: “Okay, I understood about the harm of quitting sugar in the first days, but what to eat instead of usual sweets afterwards?” And here it’s important to understand the main thing: giving up refined sugar is not giving up all sweets and carbohydrates. It’s a transition to quality energy sources.

Glucose is indeed needed by the brain and muscles. But you can get it not only from white sugar. Our ancestors did just fine without refined sugar – it entered the daily diet only in the 19th century. And before that, people got sweetness from honey, fruits, berries, dried fruits. And the brain worked no worse.

Here’s what you can replace refined sugar with:

  1. Dried fruits – dates, figs, prunes, dried apricots. They are very sweet, provide quick satiety and contain minerals. But remember their high calorie content.
  2. Honey. A real natural product with healing properties. Rich in enzymes and trace elements, and is absorbed much more gently than refined sugar.
  3. Modern sweeteners. Stevia, erythritol and maltitol (which we use at Verde) are an excellent choice.
  4. Ready-made healthy desserts – candies and bars made from nuts and dried fruits. They combine rich taste, long-lasting satiety and comprehensive benefits, including protein, fiber and healthy fats.

Verde Natural Sweets: A Delicious Sugar Replacement

We created Verde precisely so that quitting sugar would be comfortable and tasty, not agonizing. Our candies and bars are not “diet dummies,” but full-fledged desserts with rich flavor that you can eat without guilt.

The composition includes only natural ingredients: nuts (almonds, cashews, hazelnuts), freeze-dried fruits and berries, Belgian chocolate, coconut flakes, dates, honey. No preservatives, artificial flavors and colorings. No refined sugar and trans fats.

Each Verde candy contains protein, healthy fats, fiber, vitamins and minerals. These are not “empty” calories that are deposited as fat, but nutrients that provide energy and benefit to the body.

We have candies with collagen – two pieces contain the daily norm of collagen and vitamin C. This is not just a dessert, but care for skin, hair, nails and joints.

There are protein bars for those who are actively involved in sports or simply lead a dynamic lifestyle. They satisfy hunger, provide energy and help recover after training.

And most importantly – they are really tasty. Because we believe: healthy should be tasty. Otherwise, what’s the point?

Instead of a Conclusion

What happens to your body when you quit sugar? First, adaptation, which can be challenging. Then – stable energy, good mood, healthy skin, weight normalization and sharpening of taste buds. We at Verde went through this journey as a whole family. And we created our line of natural desserts so you have a choice: tasty, healthy sweets without refined sugar that will help you get through adaptation and make the transition comfortable. Because quitting sugar is not giving up pleasure. It’s choosing quality, real sweetness that brings joy without harming your health.
